Learning Arcs: The Missing Tool for Your Lesson Planning

Matheus Araujo Fonseca

Abstract

The field of education expanded significantly during the pandemic but still faces many challenges. Besides the difficulty in demonstrating the benefits of learning, there are few tools to assist instructors in organizing their classes. Learning Arcs, a lesson planning tool based on active methodologies, was developed by Simon Kavanagh, Director of Learning at KAOSPILOT—a Danish school focused on leadership, learning, and experience design, aimed at shaping individuals to create and lead their futures. This two-part series aims to summarize and translate the visual complexity of Learning Arcs from English and explain how they can aid in lesson planning: - Part 1: Basics of Learning Arcs, their origin, structure, and dynamics - Part 2: Stages of the Arc, additional concepts, and tips for creating your own Arc.

Application

  • Visual Consolidation of the Complex Factors Involved in Learning Experience Planning: Provides a clear and comprehensive view of all elements involved in designing educational experiences.
  • Ease of Construction and Sharing of Planning: Facilitates the creation and distribution of lesson plans.
  • More Structured Storytelling Across the Journey: Enhances the narrative flow between key points in the learning journey.
  • Final Objective as the Starting Point for (Co)construction of the Journey: Ensures that the end goal guides the development of the learning path, increasing alignment with desired behavioral changes resulting from the learning.
  • Increased Participant Engagement Through Active Involvement in (Co)constructing the Journey Toward the Goal: Boosts participant involvement by allowing them to contribute actively to shaping their learning experience.
